Collecting Comic Art: An interview with José David Acevedo (Spain)
Today we bring you the second chapter of the conversations we’ve had with some of the clients and collectors we are fortunate to have at The Green Room Comic Art.
José David Acevedo has been collecting comics for a whopping 30 years, although it wasn’t until a decade ago that he decided to take the definitive step and become a collector of original art.
We are sure you will enjoy reading about him and learning from his experiences and advice. :^)
How did you get into art collecting?
I started late. I spent 30 years collecting comics, and it was in 2014 at a convention in Tenerife where it all began when I met David López and Pepe Larraz.
What’s the first piece you bought?
At that convention, I bought two pieces from David (Spiderman and X-men) and one from Pepe (a page of Thor with the Fates).
What’s your favorite piece of comic art you own?
Over time, I’ve accumulated quite a few. I have a commission from Pepe of Excalibur, a Hulk cover by David, and more recently, a Kitty Pryde bust by Alan Davis, which are among my favorites. But I also have pieces by newer artists that are worthy of admiration.
What leads you to select some pieces and not others?
In recent years, I tend to look for pieces featuring a specific character. I also consider composition, collection, and especially whether it’s by an artist I like.
What’s your favorite piece from our gallery? Tell us what makes it so special for you!
That’s a tough one. From your female artists, I’m waiting for versions of Kitty from each of them 😅. Carmen’s and Belén’s covers are all museum-worthy.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start collecting art?
Above all, have respect for the artists, start with one you like, and look for something that fits your budget.
Do you have any questions for our artists? Ask them anything you’d like. We’ll make sure you get the answers you’re looking for. :^)
Honestly, due to circumstances, I think I’ve already asked them everything 😅, having met at various events and they’ve all been incredibly nice.
