In recent years, Spanish artist Javier Rodríguez has become one of the most exciting voices in modern comics—and it’s easy to see why. His striking work on Absolute Martian Manhunter, written by Deniz Camp, and his breakout 2024 miniseries Zatanna: Bring Down the House—which earned him the Eisner for Best Artist—have cemented his place in the industry as one of the most interesting creators on the international scene.

Javier burst onto the comics scene in the early ’90s, self-publishing while playing guitar in a punk-rock band. From underground fanzines, he moved to Spain’s legendary El Víbora magazine, collaborated as an illustrator with the iconic newspaper El País, and later published acclaimed European graphic novels such as Wake-Up (Glénat) and Miedo.

His dynamic range soon caught the attention of American publishers, and he began a prolific career as a colorist on titles like Batgirl: Year One for DC and Doctor Strange: The Oath, Amazing Spider-Man, Mighty Thor, and Daredevil for Marvel, among others.

His evolution into a full-time penciler marked a major turning point. Over more than a decade at Marvel Comics, Javier left his mark on Superior Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme, Exiles, Defenders, Defenders: Beyond, and the ambitious History of the Marvel Universe.

Renowned for his inventive compositions, expressive use of color, and fearless storytelling choices, Javier Rodríguez returned to DC Comics in 2020 as a lead artist, where he continues to work today. His art has since energized titles including Harley Quinn: Black, White & Red, The Sandman Universe, The Brave and the Bold, Green Arrow, and Titans, culminating in his award-winning Zatanna and his current work on Absolute Martian Manhunter.
